This interior renovation tackled the challenges of an outdated, over divided space to create an open, cohesive plan, that is connected to the outdoors and utilizes natural light, while still allowing for necessary spatial divisions.

The offices’ greatest asset is the 36” ribbon window running the buildings’ length. Previously covered with black mini-blinds and hidden behind interior walls, connection to the exterior and natural light were last. Bringing the outside in, interior walls were removed, and blinds discarded. With mature trees beyond, the window now captures modern light, allowing the space to be completely lit with natural light, and as the major visual element of the of the newly clean spaces, is highlighted from all vantage points.

The client, a tech company, utilizes project-based teams, requiring constant shifting of staff members and resources. This need for physical flexibility and team connection, called for an equally flexible design. The solution - a nontraditional use of a traditional tool: mecho-shades. Installed perpendicular to the windows, the shades provide flexible, quickly adjustable spatial definition. When down, translucency of the shades provide definition, without eliminating connection: when up, a cohesive office.

Management needs for additional privacy, occupied with a strong desire to maintain connections, dictated management offices and conference rooms flank the core space with transparent, sliding glass to maintain visual connections.

The public lobby space is defined by the conference room and orange accent wall that encloses work area and marks the transition between public and semi-public spaces.
